..of dreams and physics

January 28, 2010

as i’ve been reading a little more on curves, waves and spirals..
it’s really so beautifully written in the arts of maths and physics
(i know you math people have discovered this long time ago..
but me, i take my time to wander until my heart is where i’m looking)
and now i’m looking to physics.. and φ

the new collection is a play on curves, spirals and my favourite,  Zulu teething seeds  from southern Africa

what comes around…

November 19, 2009

This collection is built on the concept of karma, or vibration
A reminder that for every action there is a reaction
Every thought, every word you speak, all creates
a vibration – good and bad – and we are all living
in this constant motion

While making these pieces, letting my hammer touch the metal, slowly shaping the piece
tap, tap, tap, evey blow stretching the metal just a little bit more
It becomes clear to me, while i’m watching my piece of silver on the anvil,

how all our actions will shape our life, our world
One way or another

The shape i intended to create was that of the golden spiral – to me one of the most beautiful shapes of all -
just perfect!
And while each piece turns out differently, there are a few that just makes it! and there’s an
interesting point as to where does one finish
When is the piece done and where do i stop hammering?
There is actually always a moment, a moment where i know – it is done.
And i always wonder – am i close to the golden ratio now?

well.. here are some of the first pieces

rainy days…

November 19, 2009

and very happy days in the workshop!

The idea of the roses started one very cold october’s day at my parents house
In the bare garden, in the freezing soil, standing tall was a beautiful pinkish rose
A light frost bite tinted it’s petals but it was still so beautiful
And i thought, how wonderfully strong this flower is!

I’m sure this rose would love to grow somewhere warmer, somewhere under a clear blue sky and a beaming sun
But she is still growing, quite happily, in my mom’s garden! such a beauty

So the point is, the rose collection consists of a little, but oh so strong! rose that just happens to grow
 - between your fingers! in the curls of your hair or… somewhere else where you’d like to find it

so here we are,

golden icicles…

October 31, 2009

i have made a variation on a ring i made three years ago

the original is on the “home” page, and was inspired by the björk song “hunter”

the new one is slightly smaller than the original

and oh!  i like it

the stone is just such a treasure and i think the shank really enhances the wonder of the stone – keeping it’s arm around the golden icicles..

a very nice surprise!

October 23, 2009

to see some of my rings mentioned and displayed at the carrotbox  by alice matsumoto

made my day – thank you!

i am still exploring the foldforming technique. i absolutely love  watching the metal stretch and conform under my hammer blows – it’s such a great way of working the metal and i am hoping it will develop into some interesting pieces as i go along

here is the beginning

ah the smell of…

October 7, 2009

…vanilla from my lovely makalani nuts!

(or if you want to call them doom palm or just vegetable ivory)

i love working with this beautiful material – it’s so smooth and sweet in my hands

here the front of a pendant

and the back

the nuts are hollow on the inside giving the piece a lovely 3 dimensional feel

and here i have made a pair of earrings
